What should I do about my son bringing home a spanking paddle from school ?

He said he made it in woodshop. It is made of oak wood and is about 18 inches long and about 3/8 inch thick and has holes drilled in it.

Do nothing. As a teacher in a high school, I have seen all kinds of projects. One kid even gave me the clip board he made. Another kid gave me a spanking paddle to use as the bathroom pass.

If your son doesn’t intent to use it – it probably isn’t a big deal.

… Put it in a glass case where all your visitors to your home can see it! I’m sure they’ll be impressed by his lovely skills in woodwork!

Let him hang it in his room or display it, but the day you notice it gone you know he is terrorizing someone.

I would display it. It is kinda odd to have the students make something like that and be proud of it. What were they thinking.
I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it, maybe joke with him about it, but always tell him what a fine job you did on it, even though you may find it unsuitable as i do.
What happened with the bird houses they used to make?
You can have him paint it and use it to place something hot on it at the table. You can find useful things around the kitchen. your son will be thrilled if you find use out of it instead of what its really used for. Find use instead of abuse

are you sure it’s a spanking paddle? if so you need to talk to the shop teacher. It may have been an appropriate project in 1960, however this is no longer an acceptable project for a classroom. Shame on his shop teacher, this is promoting violence, and he should know better. Have a parent teacher conference with him, if this is really a spanking paddle, and the principle. The shop teacher should have been much more professional about this. You have every right to be concerned. Whether you paddle at home or not is your business, and it is something that should defiantly not be accepted, and promoted by the construction of a paddle in the class room.
Definentally be proud of his work, and find a use for it. He made it and that’s awesome, but this is an issue you need to bring up with his educators.
Shame Shame Shame on that teacher!!!

Sounds like your son has a wonderful sense of humor!! Mine found out his father was going to the proctologist (specializes in diseases of the anus and rectum). He took an old rifle stock and mounted an 18" straight branch from a thorn tree where the barrel would be. That he mounted on a frame and made a plaque with the doctor’s name and specialty. My hubby took it to the doctor, who just about went into convulsions laughing! He keeps it mounted on the wall of his office!

You made me remember one of the tragedies of my life: the senior class of the one I was in, was allowed to make crossbows at school. Then, we were told "you can’t make that". Someone must have protested.

Kids are kids. Don’t be so upset. I assume you and him agree the plan was never to actually use it on anybody.
