The Birch Bark Canoe: Launch and Paddle
Thursday, February 11th, 2010
Ferdy Goode of Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin, invited us to test-drive his 60th birch bark canoe– his canoes are works of art– entirely hand-crafted in the traditional way, with quill work and etching.

Members of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (and their families) assemble in July to share what they have and what they know. The event concludes with a parade of canoes, called the Paddle-by. Listen closely and you’ll hear about the canoes and their builders. Some of the boats are very old, and some were built by the paddler. Some are all-wood, some are wood and canvas, and some are birch bark.
