No safety had been set up before he was stuck, that’s a mistake of course but the fact is that this slide is usually harmless 99% of the time.
However a rope is thrown fairly quickly given that the access to this slide from the shore is very difficult and slippery – unfortunately the guy misses the rope.
To me the only “mistake” is the second kayaker running the slide right at the beginning – he could have easily killed his friend.
This dude is a fool … This dude is a fool, I bet he’ll think twice before trying to impress whoever it was he was trying to impress again. I’d have serious reservations about getting into a hot tub with this crew, but all ish aside, I’m glad everyone came out of this with their lives. There is a reason you take a paddle when you kayak. Hang on to it, it must have some purpose.
I have been stuck … I have been stuck in a hole in a very similar manner, however, i kept my paddle. After being thrashed upside down in my boat for a good 20-30 seconds, and feeling exhausted after failed roll attempts (flip up, then being sucked right back in) i remembered reading when i first started kayaking about the greenwater going out underneath… so i stretched my arms with paddle as far down as i could and bam, i caught the current and it sucked me right out. Of course i had a paddle^^
wow wouldn’t trust … wow wouldn’t trust these dudes to save me going kayaking.. sheesh. all those people and they still cant rescue him properly… crickey
WOW the first guy … WOW the first guy trying to rescue that dude almost get drown by the guy he was trying to save ………pretty heroic i think
i heard the best way is actually trying to swim to the bottom a bit and then away
OK for those of us … OK for those of us who don’t know how do you get someone out of a shitfight like that? It looked like they had ropes, at least two, which didn’t help if the guy is not with it, taking water or smacked around. I know it must be down to a lot of skill and experience but whats the procedure?
@brianmacmahuna … @brianmacmahuna That would have actually been beneficial in this situation. The PFD limits your ability to sink, so when you get caught in that vortex the best thing to do is get your PFD off &, when you get to the bottom, push as hard as you can off the rock with your feet. It breaks the cycle & helps the current carry you away from the vortex.
