Almost a year ago I borrowed 2 wooden oars from a coworker. The boat flipped over and i lost everything including the paddles. The paddles were old and worn out and one of them was broken. The were cheaply made and the finish was chipping off. Now I am being sued for them and the plaintiff brought pictures of canoe paddles to court that were clearly hand made and very high quality, perhaps they were oars that you would hang up on display and not use. He is saying that those are the same as the ones I lost. My question is, Does he have to PROVE that his paddles were the same? Maybe by bringing in a picture of his or a receipt? He is bringing in picture off these really nice oars and saying that they’re the same as his. so do i have to prove that they aren’t the same or does he have to prove that they are the same? please help me and any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

i am being sued for $300 plus court fees, when i first lost them he told me not to worry about it because they were crappy anyway.

I purchased new paddles and I was told that "the quality was not comparable to that of the ones I lost."

You can tell it to the judge. Bring the new paddles. Depreciation of the old paddles should be taken into consideration in determining their value. New lower quality paddles may reasonably be considered to be a fair replacement for used higher quality paddles.

I found this company a while ago that makes canoe paddles. They were based in Canada and were a small company. They made paddles designed for flatwater paddling, and had 5 or 6 different blade shapes ranging from short and wide to narrow and thin . I however cannot find the company and do not remember its name. I think it started with an R but I am not 100% sure. If you know this company please help or if you know any other company besides Grey Owl, Red Tail, and Ray Kettlewell that make thin long bladed paddles for flatwater paddling please put them down.

I can’t think of any that begin with "R" but you might want to scan this list from the canoe and kayak users website Paddling.net. These are all the paddles that have been reviewed by the boaters on the site and you might recognize the name here:

http://www.paddling.net/Reviews/showAcc.html?cat=1

Unfortunately, they have both kayak and canoe paddles mixed in.

Here’s a list from the same site of a number of canoe paddle companies that have posted information on their current models on there:

http://www.paddling.net/buyersguide/accessories/showCategory.html?cat=3

You could also post your question on the forums of the site (doesn’t cost anything to enroll in it). Look under the "communications" tab for the "message boards", These are super-active forums, unlike most such boards. If you post a question you will get answers immediately , sometimes dozens in one day! I posted a question last week and got 95 responses! Best canoeing information site on the web, in my opinion.

Search, Grey Owl Paddles. What kind of a paddle do you want to make? Oak will make a strong but heavy paddle. Aspen will make a light but weak one. The voyagers cut small trees and used the trunk for their ‘daily’ paddles. One report notes that they were Inches wide. Paddles can be made of laminated blanks. Try Eastern White Cedar. Visit Wal-Mart and see what they have.

my mom is signing me up for canoe paddling here in Hawaii and i need 2 know what size paddle i need. Im 5’2 and 14 if you need that info plz help thx.

Paco, your age and height are are important, but other factors are your muscle strength and type of canoe. To get an estimate of paddle size to start with, get a broom or mop handle, kneel on the floor and hold the stick in front of you and about 6 inches to the outside of the knee on the side of your non-writing hand ( or your strong hand) Place your hands where they would be on the paddle- one on the floor (what would be the top of the paddle if you were holding it to paddle) and the other on the shaft Move your upper hand up and down the shaft until your upper arm is about horizontal, then ask someone to measure the distance from the floor to your upper hand.

If no one is around, you could hold a pen in your mouth, mark the stick and then measure it to get the shaft length. Add the blade length and you get an idea of where to start.

If you are a solo paddler in a beamy boat, you want a paddle a bit longer
For a skinny canoe with low-mounted tractor seat, you probably want something shorter

Since guys your age often are still growing, you might want to borrow or rent some paddles to see what works best.

The material is a factor: Unless the is a reason to use wood, starting with a lighter weight synthetic could help your muscles acclimate. There is quite a bit of torque in handling a paddle.

A girl scout paddling a canoe pushes the water back with her paddle, exerting a backward force of 120 N on the water. Find the acceleration of the girl and the canoe if their combined mass is 93.0 kg. (Let forward be the positive direction. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.)

The girl pushes the water back with a force of 120N.
So the water will push the girl forward with the same force (120N) since every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

So the girl will accelerate in the forward direction.
F = m * a
120 = 93 * a
a = +1.3m/s2
