Their closing speed is the sum of their individual speeds.
5 plus 8 equals 13.
They are closing at a combined speed of 13 mph. Therefore, 26 miles will take 2 hours.

Francesca is paddling due east on the river at 5 mph. However, the river is flowing due north at 7 mph. Find the velocity (magnitude) and direction of her canoe

Velocity More or Less 6.2 mph, Direction More or Less 37o

Velocity More or Less 6.89 mph, Direction More or Less 48o

Velocity More or Less 7.22 mph, Direction More or Less 32o

Velocity More or Less 8.6 mph, Direction More or Less 54o

By a vector diagram, the resultant, which is the path of the canoe, is the hypotenuse of a triangle with legs 5 and 7. Thus:
5^2 + 7^2 = v^2 ==> v = √(5^2 + 7^2) ≈ 8.6 mph.

Since the last option is the only one that mentions this as the velocity, it is the answer.

I hope this helps!

They are building a new cottage development, www.osoyooscottages.com. The airstream trailer is the presentation centre. Construction is scheduled for summer 2012.

I know Catholic high schools do that a lot (or used to, anyway). I went to a Catholic high school though and we had the choice of Saturday detentions or expulsion. You’re the first person I know who’s been paddled recently though.

Survey Question 01061207:Th/1805. 2 of 3 http://www.geocities.com/rg0044_4/index.htm

I was supposed to be paddled once, but some how got out of it. I was in elementary school. I saw many students get swats. I would say that they were probably pretty painful since even the boys would come back into the room crying and rubbing their hind ends.
As far as being helpful, I surely didn’t want to get a swat so I straitened up, but I know a boy that was paddled quite often, and it seemed to have no effect.
Paddling in my school district in Illinois stopped when I was in the sixth grade. I graduated in 1996.
As a teacher I sometimes wish I could swat my students or at least threaten them with it. However I would have a very hard time actually doing it, if I were allowed to.

John paddles from the opposite shore at 5mph. How long will they travel before they meet

They are starting off 3 miles apart and are moving toward each other at a combined speed of 9 mph (one at 4mph and one at 5mph), so it will take 1/3 of an hour or 20 minutes until they meet.

That answers the question you asked. If you wanted to figure out WHERE they meet, you would then determine how far each traveled in the 20 minutes and would learn that they would meet 1 2/3 miles from the shore where John started (5 mph * 1/3 hour) and 1 1/3 miles from the other shore (4 mph * 1/3 hour).
